Children's Eye Tests

At Buckley Eyecare, our children’s eye examinations are designed to protect and support healthy vision from an early age and give parents clear, practical advice to help keep young eyes comfortable and bright.

Why Regular Eye Checks Matter

Good vision plays a huge role in a child’s development, from learning at school to taking part in hobbies and everyday life. Children’s eyes change quickly as they grow, and many vision concerns may go unnoticed without a proper check. A sight issue can affect how a child learns, reads, interacts with others and enjoys the world around them.

‍

Regular eye examinations allow us to:

‍

* Spot early signs of vision difficulties

* Monitor eye development as your child grows

* Offer straightforward guidance to support healthy visual habits

‍

Our approach is preventative; we aim to identify potential concerns early and advise on easy steps to help maintain strong, comfortable vision.

What to Expect at an Eye Examination

We tailor children’s eye examinations to be friendly, engaging andage-appropriate. Our experienced optometrists will gently assess how your child’s eyes are working and how well they see at different distances.

‍

A typical children’s eye examination includes:

‍

  • A chat with you and your child about vision and visual behaviour
  • Simple assessments of how well they see up close and far away
  • Checking eye alignment and how well both eyes work together
  • Gentle observations of eye health

‍

We take time to make children feel at ease and help parents understand what we’re looking at and why it matters.

Supporting Healthy Visual Habits

Good eye health goes beyond a sight test. During the appointment, we can offer practical tips for everyday life, including:

  • Strategies to reduce eye strain during reading and screen time
  • Suggestions for outdoor play and light exposure
  • Advice on effective study habits that support visual comfort

‍

We know that small changes at home and school can help protect developing vision.

NHS Support for Children and Young People

Under NHS Wales, children are entitled to regular eye examinations. These help ensure that any changes in vision are picked up early and managed appropriately. Regular sight tests are free for eligible children, and we can guide you through what support is available and when to return for future checks.

If your child has additional health needs, we will work with you and other healthcare professionals to make sure their vision is considered as part of their wider care.

A Positive Experience for Families

At Buckley Eyecare, we understand that a first eye examination can feel a little daunting. Our team are experienced with children of all ages and take a calm, friendly approach to make each visit straightforward and reassuring.

‍

We speak both English and Welsh and are happy to explain everything clearly, so you and your child feel confident and informed.
